USA's Lysacek polishes skating program for Vancouver Games

The Winter Olympics are coming and, as usual, the USA has a figure skater capable of captivating American fans, a reigning world champion, a contender for individual Olympic gold.
His name is Evan Lysacek.

OK, maybe it's not so usual.

Americans have grown accustomed to watching women lead the way to the Olympic skating podium, from Tara Lipinski and Michelle Kwan to Sarah Hughes and Sasha Cohen.

At the 2010 Games in Vancouver, it could be Lysacek. The U.S. women have not won a medal in the last three world championships.

"How am I dealing with the pressure?" asks Lysacek, who in addition to his world title last season has two world bronze medals. "I guess I'm not placing it on myself."

This week's Cup of China in Beijing will be Lysacek's first competition of the Olympic season.

"I am not naive," the 24-year-old Illinois native says. "I don't think because I won the world championship that I'm unbeatable. I think I need to be stronger and better."

Lysacek has focused this offseason on improving his spins, even though they were marked high at worlds, and posture. He has trained more with choreographers and has worked on the ice with a prima ballerina, "which for me," he says, "is not the stuff I like to do."

"I like to jump, jump, jump, spin, spin, spin," he says. "I want to sweat. I want to work. This has been a little more of a stretch. But I have been so sore from doing this kind of work that, obviously, it's difficult, and I have so much respect for what they do."

The goal is for Lysacek to present more of a complete package in his programs. His short program is set to The Firebird by Stravinsky, his long program to Scheherazade by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

"He's been working a lot on the emotion and bringing out his feelings — rather than just doing a program that's a bunch of unconnected elements — and really interpreting the music," says Lysacek's coach, Frank Carroll.

With every turn at practice, Lysacek is working toward reversing a counterintuitive trend: Not since Scott Hamilton in 1984 has the men's world champion from the season before a Winter Games gone on to win Olympic gold.

Three times in that span, the reigning world silver medalist has won the Olympic title. And Lysacek calls Canadian Patrick Chan, who finished second to him at worlds, "the front-runner."

In addition to Chan, returning Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko of Russia appears ready for a repeat after a 3½-year absence from international competition. He won last week's Rostelecom Cup convincingly, landing quadruple-triple jump combinations in both programs.

練習において毎回、ライサチェックは今までの前例から反した流れへ向かうべく努力している。というのも、1984年の世界チャンピオンのスコット・ハミルトン以来、男子シングル選手で前年の世界チャンピオンがオリンピックの金メダルを獲得していないのだ。

Lysacek will try to answer that challenge, starting this week, while shouldering the expectations that for several Olympics have been placed on the U.S. women.

"It's no different than any other year," says Carroll, who coached Kwan through multiple seasons of Olympic anticipation. "You can't think about being world champion. It's another season. It's another challenge."

今週からライサチェックは、オリンピックでアメリカ女子シングル選手が何度も立った場所への期待を背負って、こうした挑戦に応えようとするだろう。

ライサも（比較的）しっかりしてる選手ですが
フランクおじいちゃんはそれ以上にしっかりしているコーチですよね。
このしっかりコンビの挑戦を今後も熱く応援したいところ。

あと、どうでもいいけど「ジャンプが好き、スピンが好き」というくだりで
「♪飛んで飛んで飛んで飛んで飛んで（以下略）
回って回って（略）回る～♪」という歌を思い出してしまった（笑）
そのわりに感情表現や音楽の解釈を頑張ろうとするなど
ぬかりのない人です、相変わらず。

中国大会がいよいよ楽しみになってきました！
