Olympian Evan Lysacek: 'My road to Sochi ends here'
American figure skater Evan Lysacek, a two-time U.S. champion and a 2010 Olympic gold medalist, told Matt Lauer on TODAY Tuesday that he will not attempt to qualify for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi.
火曜のTodayで、２０１０年オリンピック金メダリストであり、二度の全米チャンピオンでもあるアメリカ人フィギュアスケーター、エヴァン・ライサチェックが、来るソチオリンピックの出場資格を得るための挑戦（試合出場）を行わない旨を、マット・ラウアーに打ち明けた。
"It's very difficult for me to say that, but my road to Sochi ends here,'' Lysacek said in an emotional interview.
感情に訴えるインタビューの中、ライサチェックは「言うのがとても辛いですが、僕のソチへの道はここまでなんです」と語っていた。
Lysacek, 28, last competed in the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, but has since battled injuries. His last chance to qualify for January’s U.S. Championships would have been Dec. 18 at the Ukrainian open. Lysacek withdrew from a competition on Sept. 30 after tearing a labrum in his left hip on the ice. Before that, he battled a groin injury and a sports hernia. Despite his aggressive approach to treatment and physical therapy, the labrum injury proved to be too much to overcome in time to make a push for Sochi, becoming "unmanageable" in recent weeks, he said.

"A lot of what played into that decision (to not attempt to qualify) was that my doctor warned me that if I continued to train with 100 percent certainty the (labrum) injury would get worse, the pain would get worse every single day and I could be doing permanent and severe damage," Lysacek told Lauer.
「今回の（五輪出場資格を得ることをあきらめる）決断に至るまで、頭の中で何度も繰り返されたのは、『もしこのままトレーニングを続ければ１００％確実に（関節唇損傷の）怪我を悪化させ、痛みは日に日に強くなり、延々と続く深刻な損傷を与えてしまう可能性がある』という、ドクターの警告でした」
Still, he plans to return to figure skating.
それでも、彼はフィギュアスケートの世界に戻るつもりなのだという。
"This has been my whole life so...it's a difficult decision for sure,'' he told Lauer. "Right now my focus has to shift from training and preparing for Sochi to getting healthy and trying to heal this injury once and for all. The last several weeks have been so painful for me that I don't want those to be my last moments on the ice after such a great career. I love to represent my country, and I'm determined to be healthy and skate again and really be the one that decides when it's over."

The decision was an emotional one as much as a physical one for Lysacek.

“It was easy for me to make the decision and hide from it in a way because I went right from training to here,'' he told TODAY.com. "But being on the show this morning, seeing photos, talking to Matt about it, it’s difficult. It’s clear I have a lot to process. The future is all unknown.”

The physical demands of figure skating at the Olympic level are rigorous, he told Lauer.

"The jumps and the physicality of the sport are incredible, and I think people don't know that,'' Lysacek said. "They think it looks like ballet, but really it is among the most difficult and physical sports in the world. The torque is immense. It's sometimes up to 100 times your body weight in torque. The training and the discipline that it takes are incredible, and people expect that to be an Olympic gold medalist you have to work hard and be dedicated, but the level of sacrifice and discipline to live that lifestyle are immense.

Johnny Weir, a three-time U.S. national champion who took sixth in the 2010 Olympics, expressed his support for Lysacek on Tuesday. Weir, who announced his retirement from competitive skating in October, will be a figure skating analyst as part of NBC's Olympic coverage in Sochi.

Between 2005 and 2010, Lysacek reached the podium in 20 of 22 events between the Olympics, world championships and major international competitions. His stretch of success was by far the best of any U.S. male figure skating competitor during that time or since. In August of 2012, Lysacek announced on TODAY that he planned to make a run at a spot in Sochi, which would have made him the first American male skater to try to defend his Olympic gold since Dick Button in 1952.

Immediately after the Vancouver Olympics, Lysacek took some time off, joining the cast of "Dancing with the Stars," where he finished as a runner-up.

Since making his decision, he's "beginning now just to come out of shock and start to process this," he said, adding that he'll lean on family and friends "a considerable amount."
今回の決断をしてからの心境については、「今まさに、ショックから抜け出す最初の地点にいて、気持ちの整理を始めるところです」と語り、今後は家族や友人が「とてつもなく」支えになってくれるだろう、と付け加えた。

ライサチェックの情報がいきなり増えて、追いついていない管理人です。
さて、スケート界隈はグランプリシリーズで盛り上がっていますが
このブログは空気を読まずにライサチェックの写真でも貼付けようと思います。
記事のタイトルにもあるように、我らがライサチェック、
ラルフローレンの米代表オリンピックチームウェアのモデルを務めています。

私服も衣装も黒ばかり、しかも最近の私服は大抵スーツだったりで
このところ外に出てもあまり目の保養にならなかったエヴァンさんですが
今回のこのラルフローレンの代表ウェアはいい感じだと思います！
五輪用なので、普段着には難しそうですけど
普通のジャケットよりお洒落だし、インナーも目立ちそう。
何より、エヴァンさん、無駄にこのウェアが似合う（笑）。
いつもかっちりまとめてしまっている髪が、
帽子で隠れているため、（本当は）端正な顔立ちが強調されているではないですか！
この帽子もまた、少し子供っぽいんですけど
男女兼用で着用できるし、ちょっと強面の選手もこれを着用すれば
不思議と可愛らしく見えるという、大変面白いデザインですね。

最後の方でお母様が感極まって言葉に詰まっているシーンの方がぐっとくるというか。

New injury forces Lysacek out of Skate America
More bad news for 2010 Olympic champion Evan Lysacek of Naperville, whose hopes of defending that title in Sochi next February are rapidly disappearing.

Speaking to a U.S. Olympic Committee media gathering Monday, Lysacek revealed he has a torn labrum in the left hip that has forced him to withdraw from Skate America Oct. 18-20 in Detroit.

New injury forces Lysacek out of Skate America
More bad news for 2010 Olympic champion Evan Lysacek of Naperville, whose hopes of defending that title in Sochi next February are rapidly disappearing.

Speaking to a U.S. Olympic Committee media gathering Monday, Lysacek revealed he has a torn labrum in the left hip that has forced him to withdraw from Skate America Oct. 18-20 in Detroit.

Lysacek, 28, has not competed since the 2010 Olympics. He withdrew from Skate America and the U.S. Championships last season with a groin injury and then a hernia that required extensive surgery. He pulled out of the U.S. International Figure Skating Classic with an abdominal tear.

The hip injury occurred at the same time as the abdominal tear but was not diagnosed until persistent pain sent Lysacek back to doctors, and he had further tests about a week later.

USシニアインターナショナル欠場
今週USシニアインターナショナルで復帰予定だったライサチェックですが、
残念ながら欠場することになったそうです。
報道は複数出ているものの、詳細についてはわずかな情報しかなく
slight abdominal tear・・・腹部の小さな断裂があるとのこと。
昨年手術した箇所かと思うのですが、再び同じ部分を痛めたのか、
詳しいことはまだわからないです。
あーーーー、今度こそ出ると思ったのに、残念無念・・・。
だけど一番悔しいのはエヴァンさん本人ですよね。。。
今後、詳しい情報が出たら訳など掲載しようと思います。

USシニアインターナショナル日程など
いよいよ今週、USシニアインターナショナル開催です！
ライサチェックは無事に出場できるのかどうかが気になりますが
もう５日前だし、これは出場を信じていいでしょうか（苦笑）
上記のポスターによるとチケットは一日１０ドル・・・
（国際試合なのに安くて羨ましい限り！）
公式サイトによると、気になるシニア男子の日程は以下の通り。

Lysacek opens third Olympic bid at Champs Camp
Whatever comes of Evan Lysacek's bid for a third Olympic team -- whether he ascends the podium at the 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and competes in Sochi in February, or falls short of his goal -- he won't regret the journey.
エヴァン・ライサチェックの三度目の五輪代表への道のり -- ２０１４年全米選手権で表彰台に上がれるか、２月のソチ五輪に出場できるか、あるいは目標の手前で失敗してしまうか -- で何が起こったとしても、彼はこの挑戦を後悔することはないようだ。
"Since I made this decision, I really am happy," he said. "I love the lifestyle of an elite athlete, I love the structure, I love the daily training. I love the competition aspect of it. I would love to wear the flag on my back one more time."

The 28-year-old Olympic champion, who has not competed since the 2010 Vancouver Games, kicked off his quest Wednesday when he performed his short program and free skate before U.S. Figure Skating officials at Champs Camp.
２０１０年バンクーバー五輪以来、試合に出場していない２８歳のライサチェックは、水曜日にチャンプス・キャンプにてアメリカスケート連盟役員達の前でショートプログラムとフリーを披露し、冒険に繰り出したのだ。
"I feel healthy, I feel strong," Lysacek said after the free skate. "I have had a couple of obstacles, I've had to adapt, but any athlete goes through challenges and ups and downs."
「順調で、しっかりやれているように思います。いくつか適応しなくてはならない障壁はありましたが、どんなアスリートも挑戦やアップダウンを経験するものですから」と、フリーの後に彼は話してくれた。
A groin injury, followed by an operation for a sports hernia last November, delayed his comeback plans but fueled his desire.
足の付け根の怪我に続き、昨年の１１月はスポーツヘルニアの手術が彼の復帰計画を遅らせたものの、それが却って彼の欲望に火をつけたのだという。
"It motivated me to get back," Lysacek said. "When the doctor said, 'Yeah, you'll skate in a year,' I said, 'Not good enough.' He told me I would be doing physical therapy in three months, and I said, 'No, I'll be doing it in three weeks.'"

With an Olympic title -- as well as the 2009 world crown and two U.S. championships -- in hand, why force one's body to reenter the athletic fray? For Frank Carroll, Lysacek's longtime coach, the answer is, "Why not?"
五輪タイトルや２００９年の世界選手権タイトル、そして二度の全米タイトルを持ちながら、なぜ身体を競技の争いへと再び戻さなければならないのだろうか？ ライサチェックの長年の恩師であるフランク・キャロルの返答は「良いと思いますよ」とのことだ。
"He just really loves to skate, and he felt he was not of retirement age," Carroll said. "He's young, he's a beautiful skater. [In football] you don't have to stop after you've won the Super Bowl; you keep playing other championships and try to get another ring. I think that's his attitude, that he's an athlete."

Lysacek didn't take the easy route to Champs Camp. Although he and choreographer Lori Nichol prepared a free skate to Samson and Delilah, which the skater debuted at a Sun Valley show last month, Lysacek shifted gears and in recent weeks created a new free with Nichol, set to Minkus' Don Quixote. It was finished just three days before he came to Colorado Springs, so new he forgot some of the steps. (Lysacek's short program is set to music from Black Swan.)

The late John Curry's 1976 Olympic performance to Don Quixote, with its clean lines and flawless execution, is near legendary in figure skating circles. Lysacek is confident he can build on Curry's legacy.

Simplicity isn't the first word that comes to mind with Lysacek. His Olympic short program costume was adorned with feathers. He flings himself into step sequences with abandon as opposed to Curry's cool control. Now, he seeks to pare down his movements and stretch his artistry into new directions.

"With all of the clutter that is being thrown into the programs with this new [judging] system, seeing someone with simplicity and elegance is really powerful," he said. "That's kind of what I'm going for: line and elegance."

Lysacek won't set aside his flamboyant steps entirely. He applauds the addition of a "choreographed" sequence that lets skaters do whatever they wish, without concern for technical levels.

The rest of the program, I will try to be more like John."

The "old days" come quickly in figure skating these days. When Lysacek defeated Russia's Evgeni Plushenko for Olympic gold in 2010, he didn't need a quadruple jump. Although he has landed quad toes in competition, most notably in winning his first U.S. title in 2007, the maneuver wasn't rewarded with as many points as it is today.

In Sochi, it will be nearly impossible to land on the Olympic podium without a quad. At Champs Camp, U.S. champion Max Aaron said he planned three in his free skate and at least one in his short. Lysacek accepted the necessity of including the jump, but it didn't seem to make him happy.

Lysacek is scheduled to compete at the U.S. International Classic in Salt Lake City beginning Sept. 11, where he will square off against Aaron and Joshua Farris, the reigning world junior champion, among others. Carroll downplayed expectations about his pupil's performance there.

Whatever comes of Evan Lysacek's bid for a third Olympic team -- whether he ascends the podium at the 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and competes in Sochi in February, or falls short of his goal -- he won't regret the journey.

Lysacek didn't take the easy route to Champs Camp. Although he and choreographer Lori Nichol prepared a free skate to Samson and Delilah, which the skater debuted at a Sun Valley show last month, Lysacek shifted gears and in recent weeks created a new free with Nichol, set to Minkus' Don Quixote. It was finished just three days before he came to Colorado Springs, so new he forgot some of the steps. (Lysacek's short program is set to music from Black Swan.)

Simplicity isn't the first word that comes to mind with Lysacek. His Olympic short program costume was adorned with feathers. He flings himself into step sequences with abandon as opposed to Curry's cool control. Now, he seeks to pare down his movements and stretch his artistry into new directions.

The "old days" come quickly in figure skating these days. When Lysacek defeated Russia's Evgeni Plushenko for Olympic gold in 2010, he didn't need a quadruple jump. Although he has landed quad toes in competition, most notably in winning his first U.S. title in 2007, the maneuver wasn't rewarded with as many points as it is today.

ライサチェック、先日フリーを新たに作ったと呟いていましたが
曲は「ドン・キホーテ」とのことです。
Champs Campで取材したリン・ラザフォードさんの昨日のツイートで
先ほど知りました（こちらです。気づくの遅くてすいません）
ドン・キホーテ！！
色々な選手が使用し、スケートのプログラムの中でもメジャーな曲ですが
彼のプログラムになるのはちょっと予想外でした。
物語としても、自分を伝説の騎士と思ってる爺さんが
妄想を現実世界に持ち込んで、あれこれやらかすという話ですからね（苦笑）。
一見コミカルだけど、よく考えたら悲劇的でもあり。
ペアやアイスダンス、あるいは女子シングルならバジルとキトリの恋愛模様があるけど
男子シングルだから・・・これは主役の爺さんを演じると思っていいのでしょうか。
とはいえ「狂気」をテーマにするのなら、SPの「ブラックスワン」もそうだし
バンクーバー五輪のときの「シェヘラザード」といい、
トリノ五輪のときの「カルメン」といい、共通しているとも言えるわけで
彼にとってやりやすいところはあるのかも。
そしてどういう風に曲を使い、どんな衣装になるんでしょうね。
特に衣装は心配です。というか、ある意味何よりも心配かも（苦笑）。
そんなわけで新しいプログラムも揃い、いよいよ来月は試合復帰ですね。

In other words, don't expect an Olympic gold medal performance when Lysacek competes at the U.S. International Figure Skating Classic in Salt Lake City on Sept. 12-14.

"I think he will contend. He'll go to Salt Lake and skate well, skate decently but that's it," Carroll said. "Today we don't expect the world. In a couple of months we expect him to be much, much better and 100% by the Olympics."

This week all U.S. skaters who are assigned to a Grand Prix event attend Champs Camp, an annual conference to help prepare the skaters for the upcoming season. Of course, a pre-Olympic season is unlike any other. But there's not much anyone can tell the two-time Olympian that he doesn't already know.

"One of my greatest weapons against the competition this year is experience," Lysacek said. "I've been in almost every situation. I've been up, down, on the greatest highs and the lowest lows. … I have every silver, every gold, every bronze medal to prove it so I think those experiences will come in handy because of the ability to adapt is really crucial to success in the Olympics.

"It's not like every competition. Obstacles come at you left and right, distractions come at you left and right. To learn how to adapt to them from prior experience is really crucial to success."
