Lysacek relying on risky business


EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — It's an Olympic year, that time when figure skaters throw caution to the icy wind. They take that one risk they think will get them over the bump, whether it's top 10 at nationals or Olympic gold, knowing a miscalculation could send them weeping back to their practice rink.

Then there's Evan Lysacek. The defending world champion is America's best shot at its first Olympic men's figure skating gold since Brian Boitano in 1988. Lysacek is changing the music that made him the second American male world champion since 1988. While that seems more subtle, like changing the color of his skates, wait until you hear him explain the story behind Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade."

Lysacek smiled when he said it, thinking back to the spring when coach Frank Carroll and choreographer Lori Nichol approached him about spicing up his long program.

He finally dropped the machete, and they lived happily ever after. Whether Lysacek lives happily ever after he skates to this on Sunday morning in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Spokane, Wash., where the top three men make the Olympic team, will be determined if he lands on his feet and the judges like stories about murderous royalty.

OK, it's great to express your feelings on the ice, but why change even a sequin coming off your first world title?

"Skating gives you that opportunity, because we have an offseason, to reinvent yourself," Lysacek said.

As Weir was the first male to skate to "The Swan," Lysacek is the only male to skate to "Scheherazade" besides Great Britain's John Curry in the mid-1970s. Of course, Curry won the 1976 world championship and the Olympic gold medal.
