Lysacek's coach sees way to spin loss into gold


SPOKANE, Wash. — Venerable coach Frank Carroll, 71, has seen it all in figure skating, some of it two or three times. So as cheers rained down on Jeremy Abbott, who is not coached by Carroll, after his flawless free skate won the men's national title here Sunday afternoon, Carroll couldn't help but put his disappointment into instantaneous, Olympic-sized perspective.
As his skater, reigning world champion Evan Lysacek, settled for second place after making uncharacteristic errors in a performance Carroll readily described as "labored," he was asked a leading question: Did he perhaps recall something similar from his coaching past?

"Yes," Carroll said, quietly but most assuredly, "I do."

That something was in 1998. Carroll then was coaching Michelle Kwan, who gave perhaps the two greatest performances in U.S. national championship history in the short and long programs, launching herself to what looked to be a certain gold medal at the Nagano Olympic Games a month later.

But it was not to be. Tara Lipinski, the reigning world champion (like Lysacek) who finished second at the nationals (like Lysacek), took a four-minute joyride on the ice to win the gold medal over the more conservative Kwan, who bore all the pressure of the favorite and settled for the silver medal.

ところが、そうはならなかった。（ライサチェックのように）前世界チャンピオンで全米選手権では（ライサチェックのように）２位に終わったタラ・リピンスキーが氷上で四分間の無謀な試みを経て、より慎重なクワンを上回って金メダルを獲得した。クワンは本命としての全てのプレッシャーを背負い、銀メダルに甘んじた。

"I remember it well," Carroll said, not that he wants to. But he'll use it now, turning what he and Kwan lived through 12 years ago into a teaching tool. He'll use every bit of it as he and Lysacek, who was fourth in the 2006 Olympics and is the American with the best international skating résumé, go back to the practice rink with little more than four weeks until the men's competition in Vancouver.

It's winning by losing. If the Kwan example doesn't work, Carroll can think back all of 52 weeks, to a miserable third-place finish for Lysacek at the 2009 nationals, followed in March by a stunning world title.

"It didn't hurt for him last year to lose," Carroll said. "You turn it into a positive thing."

Carroll means no disrespect to Abbott, definitely an Olympic medal contender after winning his second consecutive national title and proving he is the U.S. male skater with the most dependable quadruple jump, not to mention beautiful, lyrical programs.

キャロルはアボットに対して失礼なことを言うつもりはない。彼は自身を、頼もしい四回転と言うまでも無い美しく叙情的なプログラムによってアメリカ代表であることを証明し、全米選手権を二連覇した後は、確実にオリンピックのメダル有力候補の一人なのである。

He knows firsthand how national glory can be worthless on the world stage. After winning last year, he bombed at the 2009 worlds that Lysacek won, finishing 11th, worst of the three Americans in the competition.

彼は全米選手権での栄光が国際試合においていかに役に立たないかを直に経験して知っている。昨年の勝利の後、彼はライサチェックが優勝した2009年の世界選手権で失敗し、その試合で3人のアメリカ選手の中で最低の11位に終わった。

There's a fairly significant trend developing here. Since 1992, the national champion hasn't been the top U.S. Olympic finisher seven out of 10 times in the men's and women's events.

"The Olympics," Lysacek said, "is a different ballgame."
