If awards are anything to go by, American Evan Lysacek is currently one of the greatest male figure skaters on the planet. He is both 2009 World champion and 2010 Olympic gold medalist. He’s also something of a dance whiz – he traded in his ice skates for dance shoes for Season 10 of Dancing with the Stars, where he and his partner were the runner-up team. Lysacek is also touring theatres instead of arenas as a featured performer in choreographer Louis Van Amstel’s Ballroom with a Twist. The Globe caught up with him in Calgary during the dress rehearsal for the show.

Why did you decide to appear on Dancing with the Stars?

I was first asked to be part of Season 9, but I was getting ready for the Olympics. Afterward, though, I felt I was ready to have some fun, try a new angle – and my friends Apolo Ohno and Kristi Yamaguchi had been on the show and loved it. I have to say it was a whole different world

What were some of the challenges?

Learning how to turn in a different direction. In skating, if you are right-handed you rotate counter-clockwise. In dancing, the turns are all clockwise. Also, I’m a solo artist, so I had to learn how to perform with a partner.

What’s the twist in Ballroom with a Twist?

Louis Van Amstel has given a fresh spin to ballroom. Usually a routine is just one format at a time. For this show, Louis mixes styles. For example, a number may start off as a jive, then move into a cha-cha and end in a tango. This makes for surprising combinations. He’s also included contemporary dance with ballroom, like they do on So You Think You Can Dance. His choice of music is unusual, too – the songs are performed by live vocalists from American Idol.

What do you do when you’re not touring?

A lot of travelling. I still participate in ice shows – I’ll be doing Stars on Ice in April. I also do a lot of public speaking where I share the lessons I learned from the sports world.

I hear you may return to competitive skating.

I was 24 when I won the Olympics in Vancouver, which is considered old in skating terms. I would only get back in the game if I felt I had a shot at the gold medal. I don’t like to lose.
