Olympian Evan Lysacek visits local schools


Telling children to eat healthy and follow their dreams may seem like a simple message. But when it comes from Olympian Evan Lysacek, who attributes those very things to his success, the message is received loud and clear.

子供達に体に良いものを食べ、夢を追いかけるよう話して聞かせることはごく単純なメッセージのように思われるかもしれない。だがそれが成功によって多くを実現したオリンピック選手のエヴァン・ライサチェックから発せられる場合、このメッセージは大きく鮮明なものとして受け入れられる。

Lysacek, figure skating gold medalist at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games and runner-up on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars, spoke to students Aug. 31 at Anderson and Chandler elementaries in Allen and Dowell Middle School in McKinney.

2010年バンクーバー冬季オリンピックのフィギュアスケート金メダリストであり、ABCのダンシング・ウィズ・ザ・スターズで２位となったライサチェックは、８月３１日にアレンのアンダーソン・アンド・チャンドラー小学校と、マッキニーのドウェル中学校の生徒達を相手に講演をした。

“[The community] has a very warm feel,” Lysacek said after addressing the Dowell assembly. “To see the kinds of resources that those kids have, you just know they have limitless possibilities.”

「（この地域は）とても暖かみがありますね」と、ドウェルでの集合に対して講演し終わった後にライサチェックは言った。「子供達が持っているあらゆる資質を見れば、彼らが無限の可能性を持っているとわかりますよ」

Lysacek said the main message he tries to get across to children is that you have to work hard for your goals.

“It’s such a cliché for an athlete to say,” he said. But Lysacek doesn’t believe he gained his success by only giving 80 percent, or even 90 percent, for that matter.

Anderson principal Leslie Norris hopes Lysacek’s message resonated with the students.

“Having that public figure who can emphasize the same things that we stress at school is important,” Norris said.“It tied so well into the beginning of the year.”

Students at Dowell filed into the gymnasium that day not knowing what was in store, as Lysacek’s visit was kept as a surprise. Principal Logan Faris said he hopes the students left with a good impression.

Lysacek’s visits to the schools precede his performance at the Progressive Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular on Oct. 3 at the Allen Event Center. Lysacek will perform alongside 2008 Olympic gold medalist Nastia Liukin and a variety of other athletes to the music of country group, Lonestar.

“It’s one of the coolest things we do all year,” Lysacek said. “Bringing that [event] to Allen, which already has so much ambition already, is just a really positive thing.”
