Lysacek pumps up artistry with new costumes, music, verve


Heading into last season, Evan Lysacek considered his place on the world figure skating stage and realized he wanted more.
"I was tired of getting second and third, second, second and third and second and third and third," he says. "What do I have to do to take that next step and be better than everyone else?"

Lysacek did just that, stretching himself all the way to the top step of the podium. He won the 2009 world championship, then took gold in the prestigious Grand Prix Final in December. He enters the Vancouver Olympics hoping to become the USA's first men's figure skating gold medalist since Brian Boitano in 1988.

"He's the most passionate and interpretive skater probably in the world right now," says his coach, famed Frank Carroll.

Lysacek evolved into a more artistic skater by stepping out of his comfort zone. Instead of wearing a tuxedo or a bullfighting costume, as he recently has, he's worn feathers. Instead of skating to his preferred Spanish music, he took on pieces by Russian artists. He trained with a prima ballerina on the ice and skated with fashion designer Vera Wang, who created his costumes. He spent more time than ever before with top choreographer Lori Nichol, studying everything from birds to a composer he calls "bizarre."

In Vancouver, the men may steal the spotlight that usually belongs to the women. With four world champions — Lysacek, Russia's Evgeni Plushenko, Switzerland's Stephane Lambiel and France's Brian Joubert— plus two-time defending U.S. champ Jeremy Abbott and Canada's Patrick Chan, the field is preposterously deep. "It's going to be electric," Lysacek says.

Lysacek's strategy in his long program will be a compelling story line to watch. Most top contenders are expected to attempt a quadruple jump or multiple quads. Carroll would like Lysacek to include a quad in his free skate. "You can't go to the Olympics and play it cautious because they don't buy it," Carroll said after Lysacek fell attempting his opening quadruple toe loop in the U.S. championships last month and finished second.

Critics of the points-based scoring system say the sport has become more of a "math problem," as U.S. skater Johnny Weir contends, and less of an art. Says Carroll: "I think there's very few who can do what Evan can to the music because they're so damn busy fulfilling (required elements). So we're getting skaters who all look the same. It's like a floor exercise in gymnastics without music."
