Year later, Lysacek still riding whirlwind


This was your one-size-fits-all promotion, what touring figure skaters have been doing for years.

フィギュアスケーター達が何年もの間やってきたツアーの中で、今回は万能な宣伝だっただろう。

Blow into a city, skate with some kids, do print and TV interviews to sell tickets for the ice show coming soon to a local arena.

When Evan Lysacek did it recently in Chicago, the standard-issue exercise of selling the March 12 Stars on Ice appearance at Allstate Arena took on rather unusual dimensions.

From making a tuxedo part of his regular wardrobe to being comfortable in nothing at all for the ESPN Body Issue. From buying a $160,000 Audi sports car to taking his 2-year-old nephew on a shopping spree at Target.

The spoils of Olympic victory have been so widespread, with so much jet lag, Lysacek took to memorizing movie scripts when he couldn't sleep in Italy or South Korea or Mexico or Japan. Over lunch at the John Hancock, he flawlessly recited Uma Thurman's opening lines from "Kill Bill Volume 2.''

The question for the Naperville skater with a house in Las Vegas he rarely comes home to is how long this whirlwind can go on. Or how long someone who always has been grounded in the pursuit of a more meaningful goal than celebrity wants it to go on.

For most of the past year, Lysacek had been too busy, too removed, to regret not competing. Then he went to skate an exhibition at January's U.S. Championships.

And he has started thinking about postponing a long-promised exotic vacation to spend a couple of months training with his coach, Frank Carroll, when Stars on Ice ends its 2011 schedule May 13 — fittingly in Vancouver.

Lysacek joked last year about worries over the reception he would get in Sochi, given the controversy surrounding his Vancouver victory over 2006 gold medalist Evgeny Plushenko of Russia. What unsettles Lysacek more is the idea the general U.S. public would figure another gold was "a walk in the park.''

"I would have to be OK with not winning again because my chances are the same as they were last time, when I didn't expect to win,'' he said. "My reason for going back would be the fulfillment in the process of getting there.''

Now it was time for a different sort of moving on. He left Chicago for a tour promotional stop in the Twin Cities, went from there to the Los Angeles Sports Awards, from L.A. to the Pacific Northwest for three Stars on Ice shows, then to Atlanta for a Coca-Cola sponsor appearance.
