Slippery slopes luring Lysacek from ice

When figure skater Evan Lysacek told alpine ski racer Lindsey Vonn he was getting ready to take her on now that he has taken up her sport, it was not only a cute joke.

It was also another sign of the distance Lysacek is putting between himself and his sport, which had kept him from skiing until last month.

Naperville's Lysacek, who said he comes from a family of avid skiers, never strapped on boards before out of fear about an injury that could derail his figure skating career.

Having won the 2010 Olympic gold medal, the 2009 world title and two U.S. titles, Lysacek is willing to take a lot more risk in the pursuit of new challenges and pure fun.

``I've been skiing a lot lately. I'm almost ready to take you on,'' Lysacek told Vonn during the Tuesday teleconference they shared as winners of the 2010 U,.S. Olympic Committee sportsman and sportswoman of the year awards. ``I'm going to start timing myself and report the numbers to you.''

That brought a laugh from Vonn, who Saturday had sprained her MCL in a near crash while going 75 miles an hour during a World Cup downhill race at Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. She finished third in that race and came back to win a Super-G the next day.

``I was pretty scared I was going to t-bone the fence,'' Vonn said. ``It was a really close call.''

Vonn, you see, still is competing full bore in her sport. Lysacek, eight months younger than the 26-year-old Vonn, has been away from competition -- other than Dancing With The Stars -- since the 2010 Olympics, when he became the first U.S. man to win the men's figure skating gold medal since Brian Boitano in 1988.

He has walked red carpets, designed clothes, tweeted almost non-stop, done public service work, become the first figure skater to win USOC sportsman of the year since Scott Hamilton in 1981 and, in general, feasted handsomely on the well-deserved spoils of his Vancouver triumph.

``Figure skating is a unique sport in that the lifespan of a skater is so short, and the span between Olympic Games, four years, is quite a long time,'' Lysacek said. ``I feel fortunate to have competed in two Olympics.''

The man he beat for gold in Vancouver, 2006 champion Evgeny Plushenko of Russia, has won medals in three Olympics and talks of competing at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Plushenko took three years off from competition after 2006, so it hardly is a deal-breaker that Lysacek is skipping this season.

But Lysacek seems to be enjoying his life outside skating so much it is hard to see him returning, even if his celebrity and opportunities to capitalize on it ebb over the next two seasons.

``I am having the chance to explore other interests for the first time,'' he said. ``(Exploring) those options. . . is a healthy process and something I would have to do to decide whether or not I am going to come back to competition.''

He will be in Greensboro, N.C. for this week's U.S. Championships, to skate in the Sunday exhibition and film some special sections for the Feb. 17 release of RISE, a feature film marking the 50th anniversary of the 1961 plane crash that killed the entire elite, coaches and athletes, of U.S. figure skating. His coach, Frank Carroll, had been coached by Maribel Vinson, one of those who died in the crash.

``I am hoping I will have some time to catch the men's competition and be able to gauge where I am emotionally and whether I feel like I should jump back in or whether this is my out and my chance to move on,'' he said.

Lysacek said he began skiing during a family vacation to Sun Valley, Idaho, over Christmas. He took lessons for a few days and fell in love with the sport to the point of spending eight hours a day on the Sun Valley slopes and skiing again on days off during a recent Stars on Ice show tour to Japan.

``I think I'm quite good at it,'' he said, in a rare moment of immodesty. ``I love the speed. I won't go down anything that's not black (expert level) now. After a couple months, I'm a ski snob.''

The difference between the way Vonn and Lysacek have handled their post-Olympic sports life owes something to the difference between their sports.

Ski slopes and ice may both be slick, but the surface comparison ends there.

In Vonn's, a ruthlessly objective clock determines winners, separating skiers by hundredths of a second, and there are some three dozen races each year, giving a skier plenty of chances to make up for an off day. So Vonn, the most decorated skier in U.S. history and undoubtedly also the wealthiest, can find weekly competitive satisfaction.

In Lysacek's, subjective and often ruthlessly arbitrary judging decides the results, and a top skater will likely do only five competitions a year. A poor performance in the national or world meet can overshadow an entire season, and a skater often has little control over final standings.

Lysacek also understands he is the rare skater to have given ``my absolute best performance'' in the Olympics. ``It's sort of mind-boggling,'' he said.

There is the possibility he could top it three years from now. Or he could even fail to make the next Olympic team, as Sasha Cohen did in her 2010 comeback attempt.

No matter what happens, his Vancouver performance will stand forever as a milestone in the sport. For Evan Lysacek, who ground his way to the summit of Olympus, it is all delightfully downhill from here.
