Evan, why is Smucker's Stars on Ice special to you?

エヴァン、あなたにとってスムッカーズ・スターズ・オン・アイスが特別なのは何故ですか？

Since I was a kid and began going to the shows with my parents, I kind of imagined what it would be like to be in the cast. It's kind of crazy now that Todd (Eldredge) and Kurt (Browning) were my two idols when I was learning to skate, and they have been my role models, and now I'm a part of this show that always has had such prestige.

僕の子供時代に両親とこのショーを観に行くようになってから、このショーのキャストになるのはどんな感じなんだろうって少し想像していたんです。トッド（エルドリッジ）やカート（ブラウニング）、僕がスケートを習い始めたときからのアイドルでありずっとロールモデルだった二人がいた、そんな威信のあるショーの一員に今は僕自身がいるなんて、なんだか気が変になりそうですよ！

It was really special for me to watch them perform and they were just coming off their Olympics, just as I am. I am in the position they were and to have them there every day, to work together in the show, and to have a part in the dynamic they were looking for in this, the anniversary tour, that's special.

It's the class of the skaters, the personalities and how they show them off in the show. I think that is something that has been missing in the sport somewhat. When people come to STARS ON ICE, they get to see all of that.

You were a guest on the tour last season, which, of course, was part of a hectic year for you. How hectic was that?

あなたは昨シーズン、このツアーではゲストとして参加していましたね。言うまでもなく、非常に忙しかったあなたの一年の一部だったわけですが。どのくらいてんやわんやだったのでしょう？

Absolutely, last year was kind of a crazy time for me coming right off the Olympics and doing STARS at the same time, missing half the shows. The travel was so grueling.

Now, please, I am not complaining, it was phenomenal. I was so glad to be able to live in both worlds: skating and entertainment, doing all the things outside of skating I got the chance to do. You know, Dancing With The Stars and so much of the other things.

So I didn't feel as integrated into the show as a lot of skaters are when they join.

And this year?

This year it will be a special experience for me and my full focus is on STARS ON ICE, so I will be contributing to the best of my ability.

To me, STARS ON ICE is kind of a bonding experience. Skating is such an individual sport, and the thought of working as a team is so foreign to so many skaters - except, of course, pairs and ice dancers. But you run the risk of people not meshing or their personalities or skating styles clashing. I don't think you run that risk with STARS. The way the show has been cast is so perfect because they have hand-picked people to bring back from past generations for this tour. Everyone is so eager to contribute and so kind and helpful. They couldn't have formed this team any better.

僕にとっては、スターズ・オン・アイスは絆を作る経験のようなものです。スケートはまさに個人競技ですし、一つのチームとして仕事をするという考えは多くのスケーターにとって無関係なものです。もちろんペアスケーターやアイスダンサー達は例外ですが。一方で（チームで出演することは）メンバーが調和していないとか、それぞれの個性やスケートのスタイルが衝突してしまうといった責任を問われるリスクを負うことになります。僕はスターズ・オン・アイスのキャスト達となら、そのリスクを負うとは思いません。このショーが投じてきたやり方は完璧ですよ、このツアーでは前の世代から厳選した人を氷上に連れ戻して来ますからね！みんなとても貢献したいと思っているし、親切で協力的なんです。これよりいいチームなんて組んだことがなかったはずです。


You haven't given up on competitive skating, in part because you believe being a SMUCKER’S STARS ON ICE cast member will keep you sharp?

あなたは競技のスケートをあきらめてはいないようですが、それはスムッカーズ・スターズ・オン・アイスのキャストのメンバーでいることが鋭敏な状態を保つのだと信じているというところもあるのでしょうか？

The role of STARS ON ICE has changed considerably, the reason being sort of the disappearance of professional skating on a competitive and a show level. For a long time, skaters would compete, accomplish what they wanted in the sport, and then they would turn professional. And that was their opportunity to explore, be creative and grow as an artist and as an athlete on a technical level.

スターズ・オン・アイスの役割は大幅に変わっています。言ってしまえば、競技レベルとショーレベルでのプロスケートがなくなってしまったという理由があるのですが。長い間、スケーターは皆、試合をしてこの競技で達成したいことを成し遂げ、その後はプロに転校していました。プロになることが、彼らがアーティストとして、技術レベルではアスリートとして、より創造的になり成長するための探究ができる良い機会だったのです。

Slowly, as (part of) professional skating disappeared, the role of STARS changed as some amateurs were coming in. For me, having that opportunity to experiment helped my competitive skating. This was a show that was an outlet for professional skaters and it also has become a tool for the amateur skaters, because a lot of us have kept our amateur status.

プロスケートが次第に消えていき、アマチュア選手が何人か参加するようになるにつれてスターズ・オン・アイスの役割は変わりました。僕にとっては、このショーを体験する機会を得られたことが競技スケートに役立ちました。かつてはプロスケーター達のはけ口だったショーが、アマチュアスケーター達にとっても便利なものへと変わっていったのです。（出演する）僕達の多くが競技の資格を維持しているわけですから。

Believe me, doing your performance and laying your artistry and skills on the line every night doesn't hurt your competitive skating.

What do you see as your role in SMUCKER'S STARS ON ICE? You are, after all, the reigning men's Olympic champion.

As I joined the cast last year as a guest artist, I was honored just to be a part of it. And now my role on the tour has become one of the headliners and I know I feel that, along with a really decorated and dedicated cast, we are carrying the show.

去年はゲストアーティストと同じようにキャストに参加できて、ただこのショーの一員になれること自体をとても光栄に思っていました。そして今、このツアーでは僕の役割は主演の一人となり、本当に実績があってしかも熱心なキャストと一緒にこのショーをやっていくんだということを実感しているところです。


And where can you and the rest of the cast carry the show beyond its 25th anniversary?

あなたも含めキャストの皆さんは、25周年ということ以上にこのショーをどんな方向へ持っていくのでしょう？

It's hard to say. I think there is a lot of experimenting in skating, adding a lot of elements. That's a very good thing, a challenging thing.

なんとも言えないですね。たくさんの要素を加えた、スケートの実験的な試みが多くあると思います。とてもいいことですよね、大変だけど魅力的で。

We have several shows we do with live musicians, which adds a little bit of a different angle and flavor to the show. To have shows with other performers involved is fun for everyone.

ライブでミュージシャンと一緒にやるショーもあるんです。このショーに少し違った角度と趣向をもたらしてくれますよ。違う分野でのパフォーマーとショーをやるっていうのは誰にとっても楽しいですしね。

There are ideas floating around how to change the dynamic of STARS, but to me I am a purist in a lot of ways. I like, as much as the jumps and choreography and styles, the premise of the show, which has stayed true to itself and to what it is: a show highlighting champions and stars of a sport. We all have really owned this sport at one time or another: Scott (Hamilton), Kurt, Katia (Gordeeva), Joannie (Rochette). We all did. We all have controlled a portion of the sport and to put it all together and really highlight us as champion athletes, not as celebrities or headline-grabbers, is really special.
