Olympic champ Lysacek ready to get his groove on


Evan Lysacek couldn't wait to board his cross-country flight from New York to Los Angeles.

Not so much so he could get back home, but more so he could get a few hours of uninterrupted sleep.

"My head is not hitting the pillow for many hours these days,'' a weary Lysacek said in a telephone interview not long before his flight home.

Ever since he won the gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver last month, Lysacek's life has been rotating faster than a scratch spin. Not only is he preparing for Smucker's Stars on Ice, the national skating tour which opens April 1 in Fort Myers, Fla., but also he is rehearsing for his debut in the ABC TV hit, Dancing With The Stars, which premieres Monday.

He's not complaining by any means. This is the life and the opportunities he's dreamed of, but it is a draining schedule.

"I'm pretty wiped out. But it's been great. And I'm really honored and happy to bring this kind of awareness to skating.''

Skating is second nature to Lysacek, who received a pair of skates as a Christmas gift from his grandmother and started taking private skating lessons when he was 8. A meticulous trainer, Lysacek is most comfortable on the ice.

On the dance floor? Not so much.

Even though Lysacek readily admits as much, many in the entertainment world have already pegged the Olympic and world champion as the dancer to beat. Such expectations are even higher for Lysacek and his partner, Anna Trebunskaya, in part because Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi won the DWTS title in the show's sixth season.

"Dancing With The Stars has been a ton of fun and it's going well now,'' Lysacek said. "But I was really struggling at first. I think my partner was a little frustrated the first week. I think she thought I was going to be good right away. She would ask me, 'Why aren't you spotting on your turn?' and I would say, 'I don't know.' I was really starting on ground zero.''

Not only is Lysacek learning the basics of ballroom dancing, but he's getting a quick education on posture, new steps and, unlike in his skating life, he is working with a partner. Yamaguchi, by the way, had the advantage of having competed in pairs skating for years, winning two national titles with Rudy Galindo. Lysacek has been in singles skating his entire career.

Yet people still equate skating with dancing and for Lysacek and Trebunskaya, that equation has led to added pressure.

"The worst part is that I started to buy into that a little bit,'' Lysacek said. "I think I'm more shell shocked than anyone.''

"It kind of freaked me out at first because people were already talking about it, like, 'Well, he's going to win; he's definitely going to go far,' " Trebunskaya told TV Guide. The good news for Lysacek is that Trebunskaya, a Russian-born professional ballroom dancer, has been a good instructor. In the second season of the show, she was partnered with former NFL star Jerry Rice and they placed second. Trebunskaya is married to Jonathan Roberts, also a professional dancer and DWTS cast member for several seasons.

Amidst all of the Hollywood press and rehearsals, Lysacek has found some solace at the ice rink.

"It was a little hard when I went back to training and ran through my programs,'' Lysacek admitted.

For obvious reasons, Lysacek won't be competing at the world championships, which begin Monday in Torino. His withdrawal opened the door for Ryan Bradley, the fourth-place finisher at the U.S. Championships, to compete at worlds.

"It's OK,'' Lysacek said. "I've waited my whole life to take advantage of these opportunities. Now's the time to do it.''
