DW: During the endless days of training, were you ever able to not worry about eating too much or staying up too late or wondering whether you should be at the rink?

EL: As athletes, you always look for the balance between having a semi-normal life and social life and enjoying what you can in moderation. Honestly, I never found that balance. I was on a strict diet: five servings of fruit and two eggs in the morning; protein shakes to get through the day; five servings of vegetables and some protein at night -- before 6 o'clock -- so my body would digest it.
After I won the Olympics, I felt like, 'Yeah, I'm free, I can eat whatever I want.' I did that for a few days, but then I started craving fruits and vegetables again.

DW: Where is your gold medal?

EL: After Vancouver, I went on the "Ellen DeGeneres Show." She gave me an image of her head in a shadow box for me to display my medal. Because I haven't had time to have anything else made, it actually is displayed around Ellen's neck in my living room.

DW: Do you have any vices?

EL: [Chuckle] I work too much.

DW: How old were you when you landed your first single and first triple Axels?

EL: I started skating when I was 8. I think I landed my first single Axel when I was about 10. I actually started doing some of my doubles before I could do a single. I landed my triple Axel after about three years of working on it, when I was about 17. So I was pretty late.

DW: Was there ever a time leading to either Olympics appearance when you thought about quitting figure skating?

EL: I did get discouraged; I think that's normal for anyone. But I love what I do on a daily basis. I think that a love for what you do -- whether it's skating or math or if you're a doctor or surgeon -- will get you through those tough days.
I really never thought of quitting. I learned from my parents, especially, that when you start something you should finish it.
